Yet another BBC anti-Catholic slander

Not having a TV (as you probably realise by now) I learned of this one via Bashing Secularism. Apparently, in the programme "Waking the Dead", a member of Opus Dei shoots dead a man and a woman while they are having sex.

The portrayal of Opus Dei is obviously derived from the Da Vinci Code. The Work have sent in a complaint that the programme contravenes the BBC’s Religion Editorial Guidelines which say the cooperation
“will ensure the religious views and beliefs of an individual, a religion or religious denomination are not misrepresented, abused or discriminated against, as judged against generally accepted standards.”

I didn't see it all but it appeared to revolve around the Pope's 'banker' being hung from a London bridge - apparently involved in a some financial scandel on the Catholic churches behalf. Opus Dei seemed to be the 'go-betweens' in the dealings. I believe the man referred to as the 'Pope's banker' was found hanging from a bridge - but as for the what, why, how, significance? is anyones guess!

Oh, I see. So they had a crack at Opus Dei and not at the Freemasons who were actually deeply implicated.

Funny that.

If it is as you say, then this is very poor of the BBC. However this is also very typical... remember the programme trying to implicate the Holy Father in the abuses in the USA? That was all wildly misleading journalism. This attack on Opus Dei is really an attack on Catholicism and I hope Opus Dei wheel out all the big guns against this offensive and ridiculous portrayal of a Catholic.

I turned it off as soon as i got the hunch it was about Opus.

I really fancy writing some fictitious stories based on the shady dealings of the Broadcaster's Trade Union, with a nod to real life events and the persons in charge.

But i can't afford the legal fees.

as if this would be applied to Roman Catholicism.

In America, slamming Catholics is the "last acceptable form of prejudice."

Dear Fr Tim,

Fr Guy Nichols, wrote a short article in The Parish Bulletin, re the BBC bias, so we are kept up to date & aware. So i expect this programme is just another example.

Quote from bulletin...

IS THE BBC ANTI-CHRISTIAN, OR ARE WE JUST BIASED AGAINST THE BBC?

If the BBC were not the model of fairness it is always said to be, wouldn't more people have noticed it by now? Surely the BBC always reports things just the way they are and always tries to get a balanced variety of views, don't they? Isn't it the case that we only accuse the BBC of anti-Catholic bias simply because we can't take fair comment and don't like being criticised? But listen carefully to any discussion & see if it truly represents all sides 'equally'. listen to the way in which events are reported; is it upbeat or downbeat?- something to be happy about, or something to be sad about or disapprove of? You can tell a lot from the tone of voice!

Recently BBC bosses held a secret meeting which was leaked to the press, in which they admitted what they would never dare say in public. 'There was widespread acknowledgment that we may have gone too far in the direction of political correcteness...' but 'much of it is so deeply embedded in the BBC's culture that it is very hard to change it.' And it's not just anonymous bosses but even the well-known TV & Radio Journalist, Andrew Marr, says; ' The BBC is not impartial or neutral. It has an abnormally large number of young people, ethnic minorities & gay people. It has a liberal bias- not so much a party-political bias. It is better expressed as a cultural bias.'

Good to be informed by our Priests...

God bless,

Did anyone watch Question Time last week? More than 30 minutes on SOR. There wasn't a single repesentative of the Catholic Church on the panel. A homosexual journalist but no Catholic lay representation. The whole thing descended into a rant against Catholicism.

I fear for the future. How many oaths of supremacy to the new PC oligarchies will the Church be required to take in the years to come?

"Silly"

Yeah, if I were writing the BBC's religious discrimination policy, I'd be sure to put in a self-congratulatory back-door escape clause too. The BBC sets standard for what is generally accepted. It means they can be as nasty as they want because they are, by definition, not capable of steppingn outside generally accepted standards.

Nice. I'd like one of those myself.

I saw this programme last week and just laughed out loud when the 'sinister' Opus Dei shennanigans were woven into the story. Honestly can't wait to see the concluding part. Maybe Popeye and Olive will be implicated in some mysterious way and Eccles (of Goon Show fame) will run off with Blue-Bottle and all the loot into the sunset with The End written on their backs!!!

The BBC are such a bunch of mixed-up crazies. Many of their programmes are really good - last week's on Christian Iconography in Byzantium was excellent!

And then they go and spoil it all by doing something so blatantly stupid. It can't be for the ratings surely???? Waking the Dead is quite a good series without having to rely on Opus Dei to bump up viewing figures.

Hey ho. I still don't get it though - why don't Catholics simply withold payment of the antiquated and outdated BBC-TV licence until they write 'we the BBC promise to stop all bigoted, blasphemous and anti Catholic programmes' into their charter. Hit them in the pocket and they'll play ball - it's how 'the world' operates. Just see if they would ever dare do anything remotely similar to offend Jews or Muslims.
