Catholic MP, John Gummer has introduced a 10 minute rule bill: "Catholics (Prevention of Discrimination)." Here is the text of Gummer's speech. (Before you ask, here is a Wikipedia article explaining the term "10 minute rule bill".)The Bill deals with such matters as the prohibition against the heir to the throne marrying a Catholic, and the law that a Catholic diocese may not be given the same name as an Anglican diocese (Whereas a new Anglican diocese may be given the name of an existing Catholic diocese; for example Southwark and Liverpool)
Gummer made a good point about liberal totalitarianism. His speech concluded:
My Bill would get rid of historical discrimination and guard against the insidious future discrimination that arises from political correctness, which is itself a kind of fascism.Well amen to that! Unfortunately, in the course of his argument, he expressed support for homosexual adoption (while arguing for toleration of those who oppose it.) In saying so, he told the House "I happen to disagree with my Church." Which does rather bring this image to mind:

Oh dear! What a shame! John Gummer is a good Continuity member..i'm kind of surprised by his dissension...& would personally distance myself from his conversion stories, if what he said on homosexual adoption is true.
I don't feel too happy about this post because John Gummer has done a lot of good. Sadly, however, his remark is on the public record at Hansard.
As a lifelong Conservative voter I have to say that the new political faces at the helm of the Conservative ship (sorry John Gummer - you are a tired 'old' conservative face) hoping to lead the party into power at the next election will not be getting my vote because of their absurd ambiguity and double-speak about upholding true family values on the one hand and being happy with homomarriage and homoadoption on the other.
Their PC is as bad as that of the Labour and Liberal parties. It is indeed going to be difficult to find a party that stands for an England with moral backbone and which understands the true value that the family unit consisting of Father, Mother and Children brings to society.
If the political will in this country driven by PC idiots and radical homosexuals continues unabated to undermine and destroy the family at its present pace then the social fabric of the UK will slide into the sewer at an even faster pace.
I would say that any potential new Government with enough 'bottle' to grasp the nettle and make radical policy changes to support and give every means to assist and promote normal marriage and family life would be on an electoral winner. On the face of it you would think that going against the grain and upsetting the PC brigade would create a disaster at the poll booths, but I believe it would resonate deep with the majority of us ordinary British Folk that have had it up to the neck with years of political nonsense, hugely expensive 'dead-duck' policy U-turns, nanny-state tactics, CCTV on every street corner and other garbage thrust down our throats.
Such measures would rapidly reduce crime, youth problems, delinquency, drugs and alcohol abuse, teenage pregnancy and STD's, divorce, young single parents, abortion, prison overcrowding etc... etc....
These may be wild claims but ALL the evidence from 40 years plus of failed social policies that have done nothing but liberalise us into a moral vacuum must point to the fact that more of the same is simply not going to work.
John Gummer as a Catholic is bound to accept the full teaching of the Church and this means that the homosexual adoption issue is something he should speak out against and not mealy-mouth some crap about it being OK but....
We need MP's with spine and backbone to drag this fantastic Country, the Dowry of Mary back out of the slime.
Well, at least it's to be printed...
You never know; it might just work.
So he is what then...? Adoption by homosexuals does violence to children. Gummer says the Church is wrong, and, naturally, his well-formed conscience provokes him to publicly dissent.
You'll not be receiving communion anytime soon will you Mr. Gummer?
That's what I thought.
In the USA many people belive politicians publicly pro abortionists should be refused the Blessed Sacrament.
The same should go for Gummer,
excommunicate him.
Anon: I don't "believe" it, the Church mandates it, per Canon 915.
That's it, end of story.
I'm afraid John Gummer seems to go out of his way to announce his disagreement with the Church on this issue. I have heard him several times on the radio making himself perfectly plain on this matter. From a previous comment, I note he is a Continuity member. What would the martyrs think? He is also a prominent supporter of Right to Life, and a regular columnist in the Catholic Herald. Mmm. IDS, on the other hand, is speaking up wonderfully for family life and marriage.
And congratulations on your 100k!
What good news that John Gummer is trying to do something to remove the last traces of legal discrimination against Catholics in English law.
And what sad news that you and your supporters should use it as an occasion to criticise and attempt to undermine him.
Says something about the Catholic Herald really.
I guess credit where credit's due, and maybe it's not his fault he's been brought up in a generation that promoted dissident thinking.
I'd be upset if he recieved Communion, but can see no-one would stop him.
Alnwickian - you could just as well say that Gummer has "used the occasion" to criticise and attempt to undermine the Church. This is obviously a hobby-horse of his.
Old habits die hard for some Anglicans I'm afraid (I used to be one too). Picking and choosing like a child let loose in the pick 'n mix section of Woolworths is the theological position of Anglo-Catholicism. To mix a metaphor, would someone tell Mr Gummer that the cafeteria is closed.
But Joee, what right do we have to be happy or sad if Gummer receives communion? Surely this is a matter for him and the Priest only?
