The Fundamental Law establishes a national holiday on 20 August to commemorate the founding of the state and its founder, St Stephen, as well as 23 of October, to commemorate the 1956 uprising.
Under the Basic Stipulations, Article M (1) states:
(1) Hungary protects the institution of marriage between man and woman, a matrimonial relationship voluntarily established, as well as the family as the basis for the survival of the nation.Under Freedom and Responsibility, Article II. states:
(2) Hungary supports child-bearing.
(3) The protection of families is regulated by a super majority law.
Human dignity is inviolable. Everyone has the right to life and human dignity; the life of a foetus will be protected from conception.and how about article XV (2-4). for some common sense:
(2) Parents have the right select the upbringing for their children.Predictably, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have complained because of the clause protecting the rights of the unborn child.
(3) Parents are obliged to care for their minor children. This obligation encompasses the need to ensure the education of their children.
(4) Adult children will be obliged to care for their parents in need.

Praise God. Would that all the European countries pass such clear and Christian legislation.
PS Father did you see this--more good news coming out of Europe?

Euthansia ban bill article.
We should all agree that the pro-life parts of the new Hungarian constitution are excellent. What is worrying are the clauses that give the Government powers over the Judiciary which reduces its independence and those which strengthen the governing party's position against the opposition in ways which in Britain we would find oppressive. Catholics must welcome the pro-life embedded laws but be careful not to seem to endorse those aspects to which we would object if enacted in the UK.
God bless Hungary!
These are the fisrts words of the constitution:
God bless the Hungarians
WE, THE MEMBERS OF THE HUNGARIAN NATION, at the beginning of the new millennium, with a sense of responsibility for every Hungarian, hereby proclaim the following:
We are proud that our king Saint Stephen built the Hungarian State on solid ground and made our country a part of Christian Europe one thousand years ago.
We are proud of our forebears who fought for the survival, freedom and independence of our country.
We are proud of the outstanding intellectual achievements of the Hungarian people.
We are proud that our people has over the centuries defended Europe in a series of struggles and enriched Europe’s common values with its talent and diligence.
We recognise the role of Christianity in preserving nationhood. We value the various religious traditions of our country.
Thank God. Hungary shows the rest of Europe (and the World) how common sense should be applied. No politically-correct waffle to cloud the issue and a splendid return to Christian principles. How refreshing.
This gives me hope!
See, it's not impossible to pass laws like this.
...Now what we need are some British politicians with a bit of backbone...
I echo Jonathan's comment -
God bless Hungary!
Fr. Tim,
I wonder how long before Hungary comes under sustained pressure over this constitution from the secularists at the apex of the EU, the United Nations, the World Bank, the IMF and just about every other multilateral organization on the planet. Rather than targeting the pro-life parts, they will position the new constitution as a threat to democracy and try to drag it down.
Given Hungary's financial problems which makes it a supplicant to the above institutions, this new constitution may, alas, be a false dawn.
